What is Art Therapy?​​

Art Therapy uses a back door approach to discover, uncover and form insight into one’s personal journey and growth process. Art and creative expression become a healing agent for the individual, family and group that engages with it. Art has the potential to break through barriers in communication and language, using image and sensory processing methods to explore and express one’s internal world.

Who is Art Therapy For?

Art Therapy is for everyone! It can particularly helpful for people who might be having a hard time communicating or expressing verbally. Art Therapy is used to treat individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and grief. It can also be used to help form insight and provide direction to people who are feeling lost or stuck.

What Are the Benefits?

There are many benefits to Art Therapy. Engaging with creativity, help activate the parts of the brain that are responsible for imagination (dreams and aspirations), intuitive thinking (trusting yourself), spatial awareness, emotional regulation, holistic thinking (whole picture perspective). Art therapy can be used to help target many goals that a client may having coming for help including increasing awareness and understanding of self; letting go of rigid/fixed mindsets and perfectionism; understanding personal boundaries and preferences; expressing and communicating needs; impulse control; ect. In addition, Art Therapy can become a safe container to process highly activating memories and experiences. The act of making art has calming effects and works with the Vegas nerve to provide an overall sense of calm and peace. Mindfulness techniques can be practiced using art materials.
